Hospice Golf Tournament a great success

Hospice of Union County raised more than $102,000 at its annual Golf Tournament on Monday, May 19 at Providence Country Club!  A full roster of foursomes had simply gorgeous weather in which to enjoy a wonderful barbecue lunch and full afternoon of golf before returning to the clubhouse for food and fun, in the form of the raffle and silent auction.

Rob and Jean Kreisher, the tournament’s co-directors were elated over the total and the room was truly abuzz with excitement after Executive Director, Mike Linker, announced the days proceeds.  A long list of thank you’s were given both at the tournament and in follow-up ads and personal notes to the sponsors and donors.

”You just never know how successful any given year will be - but this year, we simply knocked it out of the park,” said Rob Kreisher.  “We can only use this year as a benchmark for future years and keep working and believing that people recognize what a great cause this is.”

As with all Hospice of Union County fundraisers, all of the proceeds go towards patient care.

Hospice of Union County Holiday Auction

The Annual Holiday Auction for Hospice of Union County was a success!

On Saturday, November 10 at First Baptist Church in Monroe, the annual auction took place and succeeded in grand style! This was due in no small part to the amazing variety and quality of items donated this year including some beautiful antiques, wonderful trips and overnight stays. Baskets that held gift certificates that combined for a great night out for the family or a couple were a great buy and a large range of service gift certificates for everything from massages to oil changes were scooped up by the large crowd.

The staff of Hospice of Union County would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers and donors for their specific contributions to helping us help our patients. We're already looking forward to next year!

Hospice of Union County Completes Accreditation with ACHC

Hospice of Union County proudly announced its award of accreditation status by the Accreditation Commission for Heath Care, Inc. (ACHC) for the services of hospice care at the end of August, 2007.  Accreditation is a voluntary activity where healthcare organizations submit to peer review of their internal policies, processes and patient care delivery against national standards. By attaining accreditation, Hospice of Union County has demonstrated its commitment to maintain a higher level of competency and strive for excellence in its products, services, and customer satisfaction.

ACHC, a private, not-for-profit corporation, was developed by home care and community-based providers to help companies improve business operations and quality of patient care. Referring to the value of accreditation, ACHC President Tom Cesar indicated, "The survey process leads an organization to examine its policies and practicies continually to clarify its strengths and improve its weaknesses."

Hospice of Union County has provided quality hospice care to residents of Union, Anson, Mecklenburg, Stanly, and Cabarrus Counties for more than twenty-three years. We were the first hospice agency in North Carolina to build hospice houses to provide a place for patients who could not stay in their homes. As a result, we have been able to care for people from all over the nation. We are committed to excellece and are incredibly proud of our wonderfully dedicated employees who have worked diligently to ensure that our accreditation process was successful.

Motorama Car Show

On Saturday, September 8, 2007, Motorama Classic Cars hosted their second annual car show. The car show was held in memory of Carlton McWhorter, brother-in-law to Motorama co-owner CarltonTyson. Carlton and his business partners in Motorama, Dale Ledbetter, have always been big supporters of Hospice of Union County, but this year, decided to donate the proceeds from the car show to Hospice.

Not only that, but the winners of many of the calsses donated their winnings back to Hospice, a show of generosity that can only be met with our humble gratitude.

Also, Bill Eason and Bob Sabin, who provided BBQ and water, respectively, through their businesses, The Little Red Pig and Clearly Carolina Water, donated portions of their proceeds to Hospice of Union County.

There were activities for folks of all ages - not only were there cars to see, the Motorama shop was open for tours of their amazing inventory. There were options for the kids, too, with a gigantic superslide and a massive moonbounce, temporary tatoos and homemade ice cream.

Watch This!

Hospice of Union County (HOUC) has been providing training for the Watchman Program in the Marshville-Wingate area during the summer months. Members of churches and service organizations are ready to be the "eyes and ears" of Hospice in our community. The Watchman Program is designed to train members of the community to feel comfort helping families in need to contact Hospice. The training not only covers the services that Hospice provides but also the minimal criteria that allows someone to be eligible to receive those services.

Two organizations in the Marshville-Wingate area which have Watchmen are Beaver Lane Fire Department and Midway Baptist Church. Beaver Lane Fire Department in Marshville received training earlier in the summer with both firefighters and EMTs attending.

HOUC's Watchman in the congregation at Midway Baptist Church on Olive Branch Raod in Wingate is Andy Polk. Andy has been attending Midway Baptist since childhood and completed his training earlier in the summer.

Hospice of Union County is actively seeking more volunteers to be Watchmen in their church or civic organization. The training session is relatively brief - no longer than an hour and a half - and it can be a real opportunity to help your neighbors at a time that they may be so overwhelmed they don't remember there is someone to ask for help.

If you or your church or organization are interested, please contact Pamela Collins at 704-292-2105.
